Feature: Messages

Description: Messages is a new tool, available on a pilot basis for Spring 2011. It allows site members to send messages to other site members, by section, by role, or by selecting individual names. Copies of the messages are sent by email, as well as being archived in the site. It is intended as a possible replacement for the current Mailtool (also in pilot mode), since support for Mailtool will be discontinued at some point. The tool is available by special request. Please submit a HelpSU ticket if you would like to add the Messages tool to your site.

Category: Assignments

Feature: Enhancements to the Assignments tool

Description:

  1. The main authoring page (instructor view) has been improved to clarify the difference between Working Copies (formerly know as Pending Assignments) that are not visible to students and Published Copies of assignments. The page has also been organized for easier navigation.
  2. The Short Answer/Essay question type now provides students the option to use a rich-text editor to include formatting in their answers. The character limit has also been increased from 4,000 to 60,000.
  3. The question ordering option within a part is now editable in published assignments. This allows questions to be presented in a randomized order during test delivery, then changed to appear in the same order when providing feedback to students.

Feature: Call attention to copyright status designations and use of SUL-licensed content

Description: Copyright status designations are now clearly displayed in the add content pages. There is no default selection, so users are required to select the appropriate copyright status. Information has also been added to encourage users to link to content that has already been licensed by the Stanford library system.

Category: Assignments

Problem: Text entered in Short Answer/Essay question type gets erased without warning when it comes near (but under) the 4,000 character limit and includes special characters that get encoded. The encoding adds extra characters that can push the text over the character limit and cause the data to be rejected by the database. This happens when any navigation button or link is clicked, prompting the system to save the data.

Resolution: Text no longer gets removed when approaching the character limit. Also, the character limit has been increased to 60,000 characters.

Problem: Audio recordings get cut off after a few seconds when played back in Firefox.

Resolution: Audio recordings now play back properly in Firefox. This applies to students playing back files during test delivery and instructors playing back files in Scores pages.

Problem: The recording applet is non-responsive when relaunched after closing the applet window mid-recording (without pressing Stop or Save/Close buttons).

Resolution: The recording applet now functions properly when relaunched after closing the applet window mid-recording, given a few seconds of recovery time.

Problem: When previewing an assignment set to use linear access navigation, the Next button throws an error.

Resolution: The Next button no longer throws an error in Preview mode.

Problem: The labels for the 'send email notification' option are mixed up in the following places: Add > Create HTML Page, Add > Create Text Document, Add > Add Citation List, and Actions > Edit Details. The instructor sees 'Send an email notification to the instructor(s).' and the student sees 'Send an email notification to the student.' for these scenarios.

Resolution: The labels for the 'send email notification' option display correctly now. The instructor sees 'Send an email notification to the student.' and the student sees 'Send an email notification to the instructor(s).' for all content types that can be added to the Drop Box.

Problem: Threads in a topic page sort by the date of the original post, making it hard to determine which threads have recent activity.

Resolution: Threads in a topic page now sort by the most recent activity, allowing active conversations to bubble up to the top.

Problem: Clicking a thread title will not mark all messages as read, even though all messages are displayed on the screen. The New Messages label will remain next to a thread title until each message title in the thread is clicked.

Resolution: Clicking a thread title will now mark all messages within the thread as read without having to click each message title separately.

Problem: The Import Spreadsheet function in the Import Grades page throws a validation error because it interprets the SUID Number column as a gradebook item.

Resolution: The Import Spreadsheet function now disregards the SUID column, so no validation error appears.

Problem: Clicking the Keep Session Alive button after the session has already expired sometimes leads to multiple login prompts that fail and require the user to quit and restart the browser.

Resolution: The system will now log out automatically when a session has expired.

Category: Section Info

Problem: The Download function in the Student Memberships page creates a file with only the students displayed on the screen, even if 'View Students in All Sections' is selected. Since the paging default is set to show only 50 students per page, a user would have to choose 'Show all' within the paging options to generate a full list of students in the downloaded file.

Resolution: The Download function now creates a file with all students included if 'View Students in All Sections' is selected.

Category: Worksite Setup

Problem: When a site is created using the course subject/number drop-down menus (usually be someone other than the instructor of record), the Add Rosters and Remove Rosters functions in Site Info don't work properly.

Resolution: Creating a site using the course subject/number drop-down menus no longer causes problems with the Add Rosters or Remove Rosters functions.
